A bigger shunt diverts less current away from the coil, so more of the total current is measured per division — sensitivity rises but the maximum measurable current (range) falls.

Concept. An ammeter is a galvanometer (coil resistance GG, full-scale current IgI_g) with a low shunt resistance SS in parallel. The current it can read at full scale is

I=Ig(1+GS).I=I_g\left(1+\frac{G}{S}\right).

Effect on range. If SS increases, the term G/SG/S decreases, so II (the range, i.e. the maximum current for full deflection) decreases.
