By ZZ and AA: isotopes (same ZZ), isobars (same AA), isotones (same NN); ZZ = protons, AA = protons + neutrons.

A nucleus is specified by its atomic number ZZ and mass number AA, written ZAX{}_{Z}^{A}X.

Classification of nuclei:

  1. Isotopes — nuclei with the same atomic number ZZ but different mass number AA (same element, different neutrons). Example: 11H, 12H, 13H{}_{1}^{1}H,\ {}_{1}^{2}H,\ {}_{1}^{3}H.
  2. Isobars — nuclei with the same mass number AA but different atomic number ZZ. Example: 614C{}_{6}^{14}C and 714N{}_{7}^{14}N.
  3. Isotones — nuclei with the same number of neutrons N=A−ZN=A-Z but different ZZ and AA. Example: 614C{}_{6}^{14}C and 816O{}_{8}^{16}O (both N=8N=8).
