The size of the forbidden energy gap between the valence and conduction bands decides the type: overlap = conductor, large gap (>3>3 eV) = insulator, small gap (∼1\sim1 eV) = semiconductor.

Concept — energy bands. In a solid, atomic energy levels broaden into bands. The highest filled band is the valence band; the next allowed band is the conduction band; the gap between them (with no allowed states) is the forbidden energy gap EgE_g. Only electrons in the conduction band (or a partly filled band) can conduct.

Classification.

  1. Conductors (metals). The valence and conduction bands overlap, or the valence band is only partly filled. There is effectively no gap, so plenty of free electrons are available and conductivity is high. Example: copper.
  2. Insulators. The valence band is completely full and separated from the empty conduction band by a large gap, Eg>3E_g>3 eV (e.g. ≈6\approx6 eV for diamond). At ordinary temperatures no electron can jump the gap, so conductivity is negligible. …
