Draw a one-way (unidirectional) energy chain: Sun → Producers (T₁) → Herbivores (T₂) → Carnivores (T₃) → Top carnivores (T₄), with ~10% energy passing to each next level (rest lost as heat) and decomposers recycling nutrients at every step.

Energy flow through the different trophic levels of an ecosystem
Energy flow through the different trophic levels of an ecosystem

Concept

Energy in an ecosystem follows a one-way (unidirectional) flow — it enters as solar energy, is fixed by producers, and passes up the trophic levels, decreasing at each step because most is lost as heat (obeying the laws of thermodynamics). This is often shown as a pyramid of energy (always upright).

The diagram — what to draw and label

Draw boxes/steps connected by single-headed arrows (energy never flows backward):

  1. Sun — the ultimate source; label the arrow of incoming solar radiation (only a small part, PAR, is usable).
  2. Producers (T₁ — green plants): trap solar energy by photosynthesis; label GPP (gross primary productivity) and NPP (net primary productivity).
  3. Primary consumers / herbivores (T₂): receive energy by eating producers.
  4. Secondary consumers / carnivores (T₃): eat herbivores.
  5. Tertiary consumers / top carnivores (T₄): eat secondary consumers. …
