Energy flows unidirectionally through an ecosystem from producers to successive trophic levels, with about 10% transfer efficiency at each step.

All ecosystems depend on a continuous input of solar energy. Producers (green plants) capture only a small fraction (about 2–10%) of the incident solar radiation through photosynthesis and convert it into chemical (food) energy — this is called Gross Primary Productivity (GPP); after respiratory losses, the remaining Net Primary Productivity (NPP) is available to consumers. This stored energy then flows from producers to herbivores (primary consumers), then to primary carnivores (secondary consumers), then to secondary/top carnivores (tertiary consumers), forming a food chain. According to the ten percent law, only about 10% of the energy present at one trophic level is transferred to the next; the rest is lost as heat during respiration and metabolic activities, and as undigested/unused matter, which is why food chains are typically limited to 3–5 trophic levels and why energy flow in an ecosystem is unidirectional (one-way), unlike nutrients, which are cycled and reused.

OR: (a) Ecological Pyramid is a graphical representation of the trophic structure of an ecosystem — showing the number, biomass, or energy of organisms at each successive trophic level, arranged with producers at the base. Types include pyramid of number, pyramid of biomass, and pyramid of energy (always upright, since energy always decreases at higher trophic levels). …
