Biodegradable: e.g. vegetable peels (paper, cow dung) — broken down by microbes. Non-biodegradable: e.g. plastic (glass, polythene, DDT) — not broken down; persists and pollutes.

[!NOTE]

The classification of wastes into biodegradable and non-biodegradable is from the Environmental Issues chapter, which is not part of the current rationalised NCERT/CBSE-aligned Class-12 syllabus. It is answered here in full for completeness; the nearest retained chapter is Ecosystem.

Concept

  • Biodegradable wastes are those that can be decomposed by the action of micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi) into simpler, harmless substances. They are recycled into the ecosystem and do not accumulate.
  • Non-biodegradable wastes are those that cannot be broken down by micro-organisms; they persist for a long time, accumulate and cause pollution.
