Sewage refers to the municipal waste-water, largely comprising used water released from homes, industries, and other establishments, that contains a high load of suspended and dissolved organic and inorganic matter, along with disease-causing microbes and other pollutants.
Primary treatment: This involves the physical removal of particles from sewage through filtration and sedimentation. The sewage first passes through bar screens, which remove large floating objects; it then passes through a grit chamber, where sand and small stones settle out by gravity; finally, it enters a sedimentation tank, where the finer suspended solids settle down as primary sludge, and floatable material (scum) is skimmed off the surface. The remaining liquid is called the clarified effluent.
