Preliminary/primary treatment of sewage in a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is the first, purely physical stage that prepares raw sewage for subsequent biological treatment. It typically includes: (1) Screening — passing sewage through screens/bar racks to remove large floating objects like plastic, cloth and debris. (2) Grit chamber sedimentation — allowing the flow to slow so that heavier inorganic particles such as sand, grit and small stones settle out and are removed. (3) Primary sedimentation — the sewage is held in large settling tanks where a substantial fraction of suspended organic solids sink to the bottom as primary sludge (which is removed and treated separately), while floating material such as oil and grease is skimmed off the surface.
