(a) The menstrual cycle is the ~28-day hormonally-controlled reproductive cycle of the human female (menstrual → follicular → ovulatory → luteal phases). (b) A labelled sperm shows: head (acrosome + nucleus), neck (centrioles), middle piece (mitochondria), and tail (flagellum), all covered by the plasma membrane.

(a) Menstrual cycle

The menstrual cycle is the cyclic reproductive cycle in female primates including humans; the cycle repeats about every 28 days and each cycle is counted from the first day of one menstrual bleeding to the first day of the next. It is regulated by hormones from the pituitary (FSH, LH) and ovary (oestrogen, progesterone).

Phases:

  1. Menstrual phase (days 1–5): the uterine lining (endometrium) breaks down and is shed as blood — menstruation — because the egg was not fertilised.
  2. Follicular / proliferative phase (days 6–13): under FSH, ovarian follicles mature and secrete oestrogen, which rebuilds the endometrium.
  3. Ovulatory phase (~day 14): a surge of LH causes ovulation — release of the secondary oocyte from the mature Graafian follicle.
  4. Luteal / secretory phase (days 15–28): the ruptured follicle becomes the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone to maintain the thickened endometrium for possible implantation. If fertilisation does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates and the next cycle begins.

The cycle stops permanently at menopause (around 45–50 years).

(b) Labelled diagram of a sperm — parts to draw and label

A human sperm is a microscopic, motile cell about 60 µm long. Draw an elongated tadpole-like cell and label these parts:

  • Head — the front, oval part; label the cap-like acrosome at its tip (contains enzymes that dissolve the egg membranes) and the large haploid nucleus behind it. …
