Biogas is a mixture of gases, predominantly methane (CH4, about 50–70%) along with CO2, hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide, produced by the anaerobic (in absence of oxygen) breakdown/digestion of organic matter (cattle dung, plant/animal waste, sewage) by microbes. It is produced in a biogas plant (gobar gas plant): a dome-shaped tank (digester) is fed with a slurry of dung/waste mixed with water; anaerobic microbes present in the slurry digest/ferment the complex organic compounds over several days, releasing biogas which collects at the top of the digester and is piped out for use as cooking fuel or for generating electricity, while the spent slurry is used as manure. Microbes used: a consortium of anaerobic bacteria called methanogens, of which Methanobacterium is a common representative, is responsible for methane production.
OR: (a) Biofertilizers are organisms (bacteria, fungi, cyanobacteria) that enrich the soil's nutrient (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus) content, e.g. Rhizobium (nitrogen fixation in legume root nodules), Azospirillum/Azotobacter (free-living N2 fixers), mycorrhiza (fungi improving phosphorus uptake), and cyanobacteria like Nostoc/Anabaena (nitrogen fixers, used in paddy fields).
(b) BOD (Biological/Biochemical Oxygen Demand) is the amount of dissolved oxygen (mg/L) consumed by microorganisms while decomposing the organic matter present in a given volume of water/sewage sample over a fixed period (usually 5 days at 20°C); it is used as a measure of the degree of organic pollution of water — higher BOD indicates greater pollution. …
