The nucleosome is the basic repeat unit of chromatin, found in the nucleus.

[FIGURE: A nucleosome consists of a histone octamer core — two molecules each of the four core histones H2A, H2B, H3 and H4 — around which about 200 base pairs of DNA is wrapped in about 1.65 left-handed turns. A fifth histone, H1, sits at the linker DNA between two nucleosomes, giving the 'beads-on-a-string' appearance of chromatin under the electron microscope.] Nucleosomes are found within the nucleus, where they are the fundamental packaging unit that organizes the long DNA molecule into chromatin and eventually into chromosomes.
