DNA fingerprinting compares an individual's unique, highly variable repetitive DNA sequences and is widely used in forensics and evolutionary studies.

DNA fingerprinting is a technique, developed by Alec Jeffreys, that detects variation at the DNA level (polymorphism) in specific highly repetitive, non-coding regions of DNA called VNTRs (Variable Number of Tandem Repeats)/satellite DNA. Because the number of repeats at these loci varies from person to person (except in identical/monozygotic twins), the resulting pattern of DNA fragments generated (usually visualised by restriction digestion, gel electrophoresis, Southern blotting and hybridisation with a labelled probe, or now more commonly by PCR-based methods) is unique to each individual — a 'DNA fingerprint'.

Any two uses:

  1. Forensic science: Used in criminal investigations to identify suspects from biological evidence (blood, hair, semen) left at a crime scene, and to establish paternity/maternity or settle disputes of parentage, since a child's DNA fingerprint bands are inherited half from the father and half from the mother. …
