MTP is the intentional/induced termination of pregnancy before full term; the placenta also secretes hormones such as hCG, hPL, oestrogens, progestogens and relaxin.

Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), or induced abortion, is the deliberate/intentional termination of a pregnancy before full term, performed by a qualified medical practitioner under conditions permitted by law (e.g. risk to the mother's life, foetal abnormality, rape, contraceptive failure). Two impacts of MTP: (1) it helps end unwanted pregnancies caused by casual unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, and pregnancies harmful to the mother, thereby aiding population control and maternal safety when performed safely and legally; (2) illegal and unsafe (quack-performed or self-induced) MTPs are, on the other hand, a major cause of maternal mortality and morbidity, and can also be misused for sex-selective abortion, which is why MTP is legally regulated.
