Contraception refers to deliberate methods used to prevent pregnancy, ranging from barrier devices to hormonal pills; alternatively, menarche marks the start of menstruation, and a sperm has a head, neck, middle piece and tail.

What is contraception? Contraception refers to the deliberate use of various devices, drugs, agents, surgical methods or techniques to prevent unwanted pregnancy as a result of coitus (sexual intercourse), while ideally not interfering with libido, sexual drive or gratification. An ideal contraceptive should be user-friendly, easily available, effective, reversible and have no or minimal side effects.

Any two methods of contraception:

  1. Barrier methods: Devices such as condoms (for males and females), diaphragms, cervical caps and vaults physically prevent sperm from reaching the cervix/ovum, thus preventing fertilisation. They also help prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
  2. Oral contraceptive pills: Hormonal pills containing a combination of synthetic estrogen and progestogen (or progestogen alone) are taken daily by the female; they primarily inhibit ovulation and also alter the cervical mucus to prevent sperm entry, thereby preventing pregnancy. (Other valid methods include IUDs like Copper-T, surgical methods such as vasectomy/tubectomy, and natural methods such as the rhythm method.)

OR:

(a) Menarche: Menarche is the onset of the first menstrual cycle (first episode of menstrual bleeding) in a female, marking the beginning of her reproductive phase. It usually occurs around 11 to 13 years of age, at the onset of puberty.
