The test tube baby programme is IVF-based infertility treatment; alternatively, the placenta performs nutrition, respiration, excretion and hormonal functions for the developing foetus.

What is the test tube baby programme? It refers to Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) procedures, chiefly In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), used to help infertile couples have children. In IVF, ova collected from the female partner (or a donor) are fertilised with sperm outside the body, in a laboratory culture dish ('in vitro' = in glass), producing a zygote that develops into an early embryo. This embryo (up to the 8-celled stage) is then transferred into the mother's fallopian tube (ZIFT) or a slightly older embryo into the uterus (IUT/embryo transfer) to establish pregnancy. It is used when natural fertilisation is not possible, e.g. due to blocked fallopian tubes or low sperm count.

OR — Four functions of the placenta:

  1. Nutrition: transports nutrients (glucose, amino acids, fats, vitamins) from maternal blood to the foetus.
  2. Respiration/gaseous exchange: facilitates diffusion of oxygen from mother to foetus and carbon dioxide from foetus to mother.
  3. Excretion: removes nitrogenous and other metabolic wastes from foetal blood into maternal blood for disposal. …
