The megaspore mother cell (MMC) is a diploid (2n) cell. If it divided by ordinary mitosis, its products would also be diploid — but the female gametophyte (embryo sac) that eventually forms from a megaspore must be haploid (n), because it's the gametophytic generation.
Why haploid matters: fertilisation works by FUSING a haploid male gamete with a haploid female gamete (the egg cell) to form a diploid (2n) zygote. If the female gametophyte's cells were already diploid, fusing with a haploid male gamete would produce a triploid zygote — wrong for the species, and biologically unworkable across generations (the chromosome number would keep doubling). …
