Bright colour and nectar are advertising and rewards for animal pollinators — since wind and water carry pollen mechanically, wind/water-pollinated flowers have nothing to advertise to and gain nothing from the cost of producing either.

This section's own §1.2.3 "Animal Pollination" discussion makes the reason explicit by contrast: flowers pollinated by animals are described as large, colourful, and fragrant, and must provide rewards (nectar and pollen) to attract and sustain animal visits — because the animal has to be persuaded to visit, and persuaded again to visit another flower of the same species.

Wind and water pollination don't work this way at all:

  • No visitor to attract. Pollen transfer happens through a purely physical process — air currents or water currents — with no animal intermediary that needs to be lured in.
  • Colour and fragrance are wasted investment. Both are costly for the plant to produce (pigments, scent compounds) and their entire function is to be noticed by an animal's eyes or sense of smell. A wind current or a water current doesn't see or smell anything, so that investment would yield zero reproductive benefit. …
