Double fertilization involves fusion of one male gamete with the egg (syngamy) and the other with the two polar nuclei (triple fusion) to form the endosperm.

When the pollen tube enters the embryo sac (usually through the micropyle — porogamy), it releases its two male gametes. One male gamete fuses with the egg cell (syngamy) to form the diploid zygote, which develops into the embryo. The other male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei located in the central cell to form the triploid (3n) primary endosperm nucleus (PEN); this fusion of one male gamete with two polar nuclei is called triple fusion. Since fertilization occurs twice (syngamy + triple fusion) in one embryo sac, the whole event is called double fertilization, unique to flowering plants.
