Nucleoside = base + sugar; nucleotide = base + sugar + phosphate. DNA = deoxyribonucleic acid, RNA = ribonucleic acid. (OR — matching below.)

(a) Nucleoside vs nucleotide.

  • A nucleoside is formed when a nitrogenous base is joined to a pentose sugar: base + sugar.
  • A nucleotide is formed when a phosphate group is further attached to the nucleoside: base + sugar + phosphate. So a nucleotide is a phosphorylated nucleoside; nucleotides are the building blocks of nucleic acids.

(b) Full names.

  • DNA = Deoxyribonucleic acid
  • RNA = Ribonucleic acid

OR — Match Column-I with Column-II.

  • (i) Glucose →\rightarrow (4) Monosaccharide
  • (ii) Sucrose →\rightarrow (6) Disaccharide
  • (iii) Starch →\rightarrow (1) Polysaccharide …
