Structures of a nucleoside and a nucleotide, showing the extra phosphate group in a nucleotide
Structures of a nucleoside and a nucleotide, showing the extra phosphate group in a nucleotide

A nucleotide is a nucleoside plus a phosphate group; DNA and RNA differ in their sugar, one base, and strandedness.

(a) Nucleoside vs Nucleotide: A nucleoside is formed when a nitrogenous base is attached to the 1′ carbon of a pentose sugar through a β-N-glycosidic bond (Base + Sugar = Nucleoside — no phosphate group present). A nucleotide is formed when a phosphate group is further esterified to the 5′-OH of a nucleoside (Base + Sugar + Phosphate = Nucleotide). Nucleotides, not nucleosides, are the actual monomer units that are linked together (via phosphodiester bonds) to form the polynucleotide chain of a nucleic acid.
