Ore = economically extractable mineral; flux removes gangue →\to forms slag; roasting (heat in air) vs smelting (reduce oxide with coke/flux to get metal).

(a) Ores and Minerals.

  • A mineral is any naturally occurring substance containing a metal (in combined or free state).
  • An ore is a mineral from which the metal can be extracted conveniently and economically (profitably). Thus all ores are minerals, but not all minerals are ores.

(b) Flux and Slag.

  • A flux is a substance added during smelting to combine with the infusible (earthy) impurities present in the ore (the gangue).
  • The slag is the fusible (easily melting) product formed when the flux reacts with the impurity, e.g. CaO+SiO2→CaSiO3CaO + SiO_2 \rightarrow CaSiO_3 (slag).

(c) Smelting and Roasting.

  • Roasting: the ore (usually a sulphide) is heated strongly in the presence of excess air below its melting point, converting it to the oxide, e.g. 2ZnS+3O2→2ZnO+2SO22ZnS + 3O_2 \rightarrow 2ZnO + 2SO_2. …
