(a) Transition metals share several signature properties (variable oxidation states, colour, catalysis, complex formation, magnetism, high m.p./b.p.). (b)(i) Zn, Cd, Hg are excluded because their d-subshell is completely filled (d10) in both the element and their typical ion. (b)(ii) Paramagnetism arises from unpaired d-electrons.

(a) Characteristics of transition metals: they exhibit variable (multiple) oxidation states because of the small energy difference between (n-1)d and ns electrons; they form coloured ions and compounds due to d-d electronic transitions; they have high melting and boiling points and high enthalpies of atomisation because of strong metallic bonding involving d-electrons; they show catalytic activity (e.g. Fe, Ni, V2O5) due to their variable oxidation states and ability to form unstable intermediates/provide large surface area; they readily form complex (coordination) compounds because of their small, highly charged ions with vacant d-orbitals; most of their ions and compounds are paramagnetic due to unpaired d-electrons; they form interstitial compounds by trapping small atoms like H, C, N in the interstices of their lattice; and they form alloys readily with one another because of similar atomic sizes.

(b)(i) In the d-block, zinc, cadmium and mercury (Zn, Cd, Hg) are generally not regarded as true transition elements. Although they lie in the d-block (Group 12), their atoms have a completely filled d10 configuration in the ground state, and, importantly, they also have a completely filled d10 configuration in their most common oxidation state (+2 ion: Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+). Since the modern definition of a transition element requires an incompletely filled d-subshell in the element or in at least one of its common ions, Zn, Cd and Hg fail to qualify and are excluded from the transition series proper.
