Froth floatation concentrates sulphide ores by exploiting differences in wettability; a flux combines with infusible gangue to form fusible, removable slag.

(a) Froth floatation method: This method is used to concentrate sulphide ores (e.g. galena PbS, zinc blende ZnS, copper pyrites) based on the difference in wettability of the ore and gangue particles by water and oil. Finely powdered ore is mixed with water and a small amount of pine oil/collector (frothing agent) in a large tank, and air is blown through the suspension using an agitator. The sulphide ore particles are preferentially wetted by oil and become hydrophobic; they stick to the air bubbles and rise to the surface as froth, which is skimmed off. The gangue particles, being hydrophilic, remain wetted by water and settle down at the bottom.
