Einstein's photoelectric equation: 12mvmax2=hν−ϕ0\tfrac12 m v_{max}^2 = h\nu - \phi_0.

Concept. Light of frequency ν\nu carries energy in quanta (photons) of hνh\nu. When a photon strikes a metal surface, energy ϕ0\phi_0 (the work function) is used to liberate the electron and the surplus appears as the electron's maximum kinetic energy.

Equation.

hν=ϕ0+12mvmax2h\nu = \phi_0 + \tfrac12 m v_{max}^2

or equivalently

12mvmax2=hν−ϕ0=h(ν−u0)\tfrac12 m v_{max}^2 = h\nu - \phi_0 = h(\nu - u_0) …
