Q.A parallel plate capacitor CC is connected to a cell of emf EE through a key KK in a simple single loop. Consider two situations: (A) the key KK is kept closed and the plates are pulled apart using an insulating handle; (B) the key KK is opened first and then the plates are pulled apart using an insulating handle. Choose the correct option(s).

(a) In A: QQ remains same but CC changes.
(b) In B: VV remains same but CC changes.
(c) In A: VV remains same and hence QQ changes.
(d) In B: QQ remains same and hence VV changes.

Separating the plates increases dd and so decreases C=ε0A/dC = \varepsilon_0 A/d. Whether QQ or VV stays fixed depends on the key: a closed key holds VV constant (so QQ drops); an open key holds QQ constant (so VV rises).

Concept

For a parallel-plate capacitor C=ε0AdC = \dfrac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d}, with Q=CVQ = CV. A connected battery clamps VV; a disconnected (isolated) capacitor conserves QQ.

Steps

  1. Increasing dd decreases CC in both situations. …
