Question of 73

Q.What do you understand by total internal reflection of light? Write two applications of it.

(OR)

Beyond the critical angle at a denser-to-rarer boundary, light is entirely reflected back — no refracted ray exists.

Main question — Total Internal Reflection (TIR): When light travels from an optically denser medium to a rarer medium and the angle of incidence exceeds a certain critical angle θc\theta_c (defined by sin⁡θc=1/μ\sin\theta_c = 1/\mu, where μ\mu is the refractive index of the denser medium with respect to the rarer one), the light is not refracted into the rarer medium at all; instead, the entire incident light is reflected back into the denser medium, obeying the laws of reflection. This is called total internal reflection.

Two applications: (1) Optical fibres, used in telecommunications and medical endoscopy, guide light along their length by repeated total internal reflection at the core–cladding boundary. (2) Totally reflecting prisms (right-angled prisms), used in periscopes, binoculars, and cameras, reflect light through 90° or 180° via TIR, more efficiently than ordinary mirrors.

OR (alternative): Wavelength in air λair=600\lambda_{air} = 600 nm, refractive index of glass μ=1.5\mu = 1.5. …
