Question of 73

Q.Two convex lenses are made from different materials (n1=1.5n_1=1.5 and n2=1.6n_2=1.6). If both the lenses have same radii of curvature and are kept in same medium, then analyse which lens will have larger focal length and why?

1/f ∝ (n−1) when R1, R2 and the medium are fixed; the lens with the smaller refractive index has the larger focal length.

By the lensmaker's formula, 1f=(n−1)(1R1−1R2)\dfrac{1}{f}=(n-1)\left(\dfrac{1}{R_1}-\dfrac{1}{R_2}\right). Since both lenses have the same radii of curvature and sit in the same surrounding medium, the geometric factor (1R1−1R2)\left(\dfrac{1}{R_1}-\dfrac{1}{R_2}\right) is identical for both, so 1f∝(n−1)\dfrac1f\propto(n-1).

Lens 1: (n1−1)=(1.5−1)=0.5(n_1-1)=(1.5-1)=0.5. Lens 2: (n2−1)=(1.6−1)=0.6(n_2-1)=(1.6-1)=0.6.
