Sky wave = ionospheric reflection of MF/HF waves for long range; space wave = straight line-of-sight travel of VHF/UHF waves limited by Earth's curvature. (Topic: Communication Systems — removed from the current syllabus, answered as it appeared in this paper.)

Sky-wave propagation.

  • Frequency range: roughly 22–30 MHz30\,\text{MHz} (short/high-frequency band).
  • Mechanism: the wave radiated upward is reflected (refracted) back to Earth by the ionosphere; by repeated reflections between the ionosphere and ground it can reach far beyond the horizon.
  • Use: long-distance / short-wave radio broadcasting.

Space-wave (line-of-sight) propagation.

  • Frequency range: above about 40 MHz40\,\text{MHz} (VHF, UHF, microwaves) — these penetrate the ionosphere and are not reflected. …
