Labelled amplitude-modulated wave: high-frequency carrier whose envelope follows the message signal; μ = A_m/A_c.
Labelled amplitude-modulated wave: high-frequency carrier whose envelope follows the message signal; μ = A_m/A_c.

AM wave = carrier whose amplitude envelope follows the message; modulation index μ=Am/Ac\mu=A_m/A_c. (Communication Systems — removed from current syllabus, answered as printed.)

Amplitude-modulated wave (description of the labelled diagram). Plot amplitude versus time. The AM wave is a high-frequency sinusoidal carrier whose amplitude is not constant but varies (is modulated) in step with the low-frequency message signal. The line joining the successive peaks of the carrier — the envelope — has the shape of the message signal. Label: the fast oscillation is the carrier, the slowly varying outline (top and bottom) is the modulating (message) signal / envelope, AcA_c = carrier amplitude, AmA_m = message amplitude; Amax=Ac+AmA_{max}=A_c+A_m and Amin=Ac−AmA_{min}=A_c-A_m.
