Question of 37

Q.What is the mode of propagation of waves having frequency range 30 MHz to 30 GHz? What would be the maximum distance of propagation between a transmitting antenna of height 45 meter and a receiver antenna of height 20 meter for satisfactory communication in Line-of-sight (LOS) mode? (Given, Radius of earth =6.4×10⁶ meter).

30 MHz–30 GHz ⇒ space-wave (LOS) propagation; d=2RhT+2RhR≈40d=\sqrt{2Rh_T}+\sqrt{2Rh_R}\approx 40 km. (Communication Systems — removed from current syllabus, answered as printed.)

Mode of propagation. Waves in the range 30 MHz to 30 GHz (VHF, UHF and microwaves) have frequency too high to be reflected by the ionosphere — they penetrate it. Hence they propagate by space-wave (line-of-sight) propagation, travelling in a straight line directly from the transmitting to the receiving antenna.

Maximum line-of-sight distance. For a transmitting antenna of height hTh_T and a receiving antenna of height hRh_R on the Earth of radius RR, the maximum LOS range is

d=2R hT+2R hRd = \sqrt{2R\,h_T} + \sqrt{2R\,h_R}

Given. hT=45 mh_T = 45\,\text{m}, hR=20 mh_R = 20\,\text{m}, R=6.4×106 mR = 6.4\times10^{6}\,\text{m}.
