Question 46 of 46

Q.(i) Write two points to distinguish between interference and diffraction fringes.

(ii) In a Young's double slit experiment, fringes are obtained on a screen placed a certain distance away from the slits. If the screen is moved by 5 cm towards the slits, the fringe width changes by 30 μ\mum. Given that the slits are 1 mm apart, calculate the wavelength of the light used.

Interference (two coherent sources, uniform equal fringes) vs diffraction (one wavefront's wavelets, unequal fringes, bright centre); λ=∣Δβ∣d/∣ΔD∣=600 \lambda=|\Delta\beta|d/|\Delta D|=600\,nm.

(i) Two distinctions.

  1. Interference fringes arise from the superposition of waves from two (or more) coherent sources, while diffraction fringes arise from secondary wavelets originating from different parts of the same wavefront (a single source/slit).
  2. In interference all bright fringes have equal width and equal intensity; in diffraction the central maximum is broadest and brightest, and the secondary maxima have unequal width and rapidly decreasing intensity.

(ii) Wavelength. Fringe width β=λDd\beta=\dfrac{\lambda D}{d}, so for a change in screen distance ΔD\Delta D at fixed λ,d\lambda,d: Δβ=λ ΔDd\Delta\beta=\dfrac{\lambda\,\Delta D}{d}. …
