Huygens' principle constructs a new wavefront as the envelope of secondary wavelets from every point of the old one.

Huygens' principle of secondary wavelets states:

  1. Every point on a given (primary) wavefront acts as a source of new, secondary disturbances called secondary wavelets, which spread out in all directions with the speed of the wave in that medium.

  2. The new wavefront at any later time is given by the forward common tangent surface (the envelope) to all these secondary wavelets at that instant.
