Committees (1948-50): the Tara Chand Committee (1948) recommended a Central Institute of PE and Recreation; the Central Advisory Board of Physical Education (1950) pushed for compulsory PE at school level and authored the 1956 National Plan of Physical Education and Recreation.
Coaching and institutions (1953-65): Rajkumari Amrit Kaur's 1953 Coaching Scheme led to the National Institute of Sports (NIS) at Patiala in 1961. The All India Council of Sports (1954) liaised between government and sports federations and set up State/District Sports Councils. India's first PE college, LCPE, was founded at Gwalior in 1957, becoming LNCPE in 1973 and the Deemed University LNIPE in 1995. The Sports and Youth Welfare Department (1958), the National Physical Efficiency Drive (1959) and the National Fitness Corps (1965) extended this to general fitness.
Talent and women's sport (1970-75): the Rural Sports Tournament Scheme and Sports Talent Search Scheme (1970-71) found rural/state/national talent, and the National Sports Championship for Women began in 1975. …
