Slime moulds are saprophytic, spore-producing protists. Under favourable conditions they exist as a spreading, multinucleate mass of protoplasm called a plasmodium, which can grow to several feet in size and creeps over decaying matter, engulfing organic material as it moves. When food or moisture becomes scarce, the plasmodium differentiates and forms fruiting bodies bearing spores with extremely resistant walls, able to survive intense heat, cold and unfavourable pH for long periods -- this cycle of a mobile feeding stage followed by a resistant spore stage is the group's most distinctive life-cycle feature. …
