Mitosis involves a single division of the parent cell, producing exactly two daughter cells, each carrying the same, diploid chromosome number as the parent cell (2n to 2n) and genetically identical to it. Meiosis, by contrast, involves two successive divisions -- meiosis I and meiosis II -- without an intervening round of DNA replication, so that one diploid parent cell ultimately produces four daughter cells, each carrying only half the parent's chromosome number, the haploid number (2n to n), because meiosis I halves the chromosome number by separating whole homologous chromosomes rather than sister chromatids. …
