Once karyokinesis (nuclear division) is complete at the end of telophase, cytokinesis divides the cytoplasm itself, distributing the parent cell's cytoplasm and organelles between the two newly formed daughter nuclei to produce two separate daughter cells. In an animal cell, which has only a flexible plasma membrane at its surface, cytokinesis proceeds by the formation of a cleavage furrow -- a constriction of the plasma membrane that deepens progressively around the cell's equator until it pinches the cell fully in two.
