The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an extensive network of membranous tubules, vesicles and cisternae, occurring as rough ER (RER, studded with ribosomes, synthesising proteins for secretion, membrane insertion or delivery to other organelles) and smooth ER (SER, lacking ribosomes, specialising in lipid and steroid synthesis). Material made in the ER is packaged into transport vesicles that travel to the Golgi apparatus.
The Golgi apparatus is a stack of flattened cisternae with a receiving cis face (closest to the ER) and a dispatching trans face. As material moves through the stack, Golgi enzymes chemically modify it -- notably by glycosylation, adding carbohydrate chains to form glycoproteins and glycolipids -- before it is packaged into vesicles at the trans face and sent to its correct destination: another organelle, the plasma membrane, or release outside the cell by exocytosis. In plant cells, the Golgi apparatus also contributes to cell-plate formation during cell division.
Some of the vesicles the Golgi packages become lysosomes -- vesicles loaded with hydrolytic enzymes (lipases, proteases, carbohydrases) active at acidic pH. Lysosomes digest material taken in by phagocytosis and, through autophagy, the cell's own worn-out organelles; if their membrane ruptures, their enzymes can digest the cell's own contents, earning lysosomes the description "suicide bags." …
