Lysosomes, first described by Christian de Duve, are membrane-bound vesicles packaged by the Golgi apparatus and loaded with hydrolytic enzymes -- lipases, proteases and carbohydrases -- that are active at the acidic pH maintained inside the organelle. They carry out intracellular digestion of material taken in by phagocytosis and of the cell's own worn-out organelles (autophagy); if their membrane ruptures, the released enzymes can digest the cell's own contents, which is why lysosomes are popularly called the cell's "suicide bags."
