The fluid mosaic model describes the plasma membrane as being built from a bilayer of phospholipid molecules, with hydrophilic heads facing the two aqueous surfaces and hydrophobic tails facing inward. Embedded within this bilayer are integral proteins (partly or fully spanning the membrane) and peripheral proteins (attached loosely to a surface); cholesterol molecules are interspersed among the phospholipids (chiefly in animal cell membranes); and glycoproteins and glycolipids, formed by carbohydrate chains attached to some outer-surface proteins and lipids, act as cell-recognition markers.
