Fibrous joints are immovable joints in which two bones are held tightly together by a thin layer of fibrous connective tissue with no cavity between them, as at the sutures between the flat bones of the skull. Cartilaginous joints are slightly movable joints in which the adjoining bones are connected by a pad or disc of cartilage, permitting limited bending or compression, as at the symphysis pubis between the two pubic bones or between the bodies of adjacent vertebrae.
