The sliding filament theory is the currently accepted explanation of how a sarcomere, and therefore a whole muscle fibre, shortens during contraction. It states that contraction is produced not by any shortening of the individual thick or thin filaments themselves, but by the thin (actin) filaments being actively pulled -- made to slide -- further inward over the stationary thick (myosin) filaments, using the repeated cross-bridge cycling of the myosin heads described in section 18.4. As the thin filaments from each end of the sarcomere slide further towards its centre, the two Z lines, to which the thin filaments are anchored, are drawn closer together, shortening the sarcomere as a whole. Because it is the degree of overlap between the two filament types that changes, and not the length of either filament, the theory makes a precise, testable prediction about which bands of the sarcomere change size during contraction. The A band, whose length is defined purely by the length of the thick filaments, does not change at all, since the thick filaments themselves are not shortening. The I band, the zone at each end of the sarcomere where only thin filaments are present with no thick-filament overlap, becomes progressively narrower as the thin filaments slide further into the A band region. The H zone, the central part of the A band where only thick filaments are present with no thin-filament overlap, also narrows as the leading ends of the thin filaments advance towards the centre of the sarcomere, and can disappear altogether at very strong contraction, when the thin filaments from each side meet or even overlap past the centre. Since the shortening of the whole muscle fibre is simply the sum of the shortening of every sarcomere arranged in series along every myofibril, even the small change in each individual sarcomere adds up to the visible shortening of the whole muscle during a contraction.

[!ANSWER]

Thin filaments slide inward over thick filaments -- A band constant, I band and H zone shorten, Z lines move closer together.
