Priestley found that a candle or mouse sealed in a jar would eventually go out or die, having "injured" the air. Adding a sprig of mint to the sealed jar let the candle burn, or the mouse survive, for longer -- the plant appeared to restore whatever had been used up. This was the first experimental hint (later shown to be oxygen) that plants release a gas supporting both combustion and respiration.

[!ANSWER]

(b) restores to the air something that a burning candle or a living mouse had used up
