Several intermediates of glycolysis and the TCA cycle are routinely withdrawn from the pathway to serve as starting materials for biosynthesis, rather than being carried on to complete oxidation. For example, alpha-ketoglutaric acid and oxaloacetic acid are converted, by transamination, into the amino acids glutamic acid and aspartic acid respectively, which then serve as precursors for other amino acids needed in protein synthesis.
