Markownikoff's rule states that in the addition of to an unsymmetrical alkene, the halogen attaches to the more substituted carbon (the one bearing fewer hydrogens), via the more stable carbocation intermediate.
However, when peroxides are present, addition proceeds by a free-radical chain mechanism instead of the ionic mechanism, and the bromine adds to the less substituted (terminal) carbon — this is the anti-Markownikoff or Kharasch peroxide effect.
