When two springs of force constants k1k_1 and k2k_2 are joined end to end (in series) to support a block, the SAME force FF is transmitted through both springs, one after the other. By Hooke's law applied separately to each spring, their individual extensions are

x1=Fk1,x2=Fk2x_1 = \frac{F}{k_1}, \qquad x_2 = \frac{F}{k_2}

The total extension of the whole series combination is the sum of these two,

x=x1+x2=Fk1+Fk2x = x_1+x_2 = \frac{F}{k_1}+\frac{F}{k_2} …
