Ex-situ ('off-site') conservation protects threatened species away from their natural home, in controlled facilities such as zoos, botanical gardens and seed/gene banks.

Ex-situ conservation — the strategy of conserving biodiversity by taking the threatened animals and plants out of their natural habitat and maintaining them in special conditions where they can be protected, propagated and given special care.

It is used when a species' natural habitat is too degraded, or its numbers are dangerously low, for in-situ (on-site) protection to succeed.

Common methods / examples:

  • Zoological parks (zoos) and wildlife safari parks — for animals.
