Ex-situ conservation protects species by removing them from threats in their natural habitat and maintaining them in controlled, artificial settings.

Ex-situ conservation literally means 'off-site conservation' — the protection of components of biological diversity outside their natural habitats, through methods like captive breeding, cryopreservation of gametes/tissues, in vitro fertilisation, and seed/gene banks. It complements in-situ conservation (protection within natural habitats, e.g., national parks/biosphere reserves) and is especially useful for critically endangered species whose numbers in the wild are too low to survive without intervention.
