Tissue culture exploits the totipotency of plant cells to grow whole plants in vitro, and micropropagation applies this to mass-produce genetically identical plants.

Tissue culture: a technique in which cells, tissues, or organs isolated from a plant (an "explant") are grown and multiplied in vitro (in a laboratory, outside the plant body) on an artificial nutrient medium containing sugars, minerals, vitamins, and plant growth hormones (auxins, cytokinins), under sterile (aseptic) conditions. This is based on the property of totipotency — the ability of a single plant cell to regenerate into a complete new plant, given the right conditions.

Micropropagation: the practical, commercial application of tissue culture in which a large number of genetically identical (clonal) plantlets are rapidly produced from a small piece of tissue (explant) of a single, selected "mother" plant.
