Amniocentesis analyses fetal cells from amniotic fluid to detect chromosomal disorders such as Down syndrome.

Amniocentesis is a prenatal diagnostic technique in which a small sample of amniotic fluid (containing shed fetal cells) is withdrawn from the amniotic sac. The fetal cells are cultured and their chromosomes are examined (karyotyping) to detect chromosomal abnormalities, most notably Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), as well as other aneuploidies such as Klinefelter's and Turner's syndrome.
