For a binomial distribution, variance =npq=npq and mean =np=np; since 0<q<10<q<1, variance is always strictly less than the mean.

For a binomial distribution with parameters nn and pp (where q=1−pq=1-p):

Mean=np,Variance=npq\text{Mean} = np, \qquad \text{Variance} = npq

Since q=1−p<1q = 1-p < 1 (as 0<p<10<p<1 strictly, for a genuine binomial experiment), we always have:

Variance=npq<np=Mean\text{Variance} = npq < np = \text{Mean}
